To become a Notary Public in Minnesota you must apply to the Minnesota Secretary of State.
Notary Commission Certificate
The Minnesota Secretary of State will issue a Notary Commission Certificate. This certificate must be registered with your resident Minnesota county, in person. The commission of a non-resident notary must be recorded in the Minnesota county stated on the notary commission.
When registering with the county, please bring:
- Notary Commission certificate from The Minnesota Secretary of State.
- Government issued picture ID with current address.
- $20 fee
Changing Your Name
Name changes for a notary commission are done through the Minnesota Secretary of State. An updated notary commission will be issued. The updated notary commission certificate would need to be registered with the resident county in Minnesota. The commission of a non-resident notary must be recorded in the Minnesota county stated on the notary commission.
The $20 fee is required each time you file with the county.
