The State Soldiers Assistance Program (SSAP) has a temporary program called Subsistence that provides emergency financial assistance to disabled veterans and their families. This program is designed to be a 'bridge' when disabled veterans are temporarily not receiving income, or are receiving only a very small income. Subsistence assists with basic living expenses such as:
Allowance for personal needs
Health Insurance Premiums (including COBRA)
Shelter
Utilities
You are eligible if you meet all of these qualifications:
You are a veteran, spouse / widow(er) of a veteran, or a qualifying dependent of a veteran.
The veteran served at least 181 days of active duty or completed the term of enlistment or has a service connected disability.
You are and recently have been a Minnesota resident for 30+ days.
The veteran must also be disabled and temporarily receiving a small income or no income.
Your household liquid assets must be less than $3,000 for a single veteran, or $5,000 for a family. Assets do not include a home, vehicle, recreational vehicle, and other items.
