Training Requirements for Licensed Child Care

Training for Applicants

New applicants must complete the following pre-service training requirements prior to licensure:

  • Developmentally Appropriate Behavior Guidance (4 hours)*
  • Supervising for Safety (6 hours)*
  • Pediatric CPR
  • First Aid
  • SUID – Sudden Unexpected Infant Death*
  • AHT – Abusive Head Trauma*
  • Child Passenger Restraint (if going to transport children)

Department of Human Services approved training only. Training can be completed in-person or online and can be accessed on the Develop website.

Training for Current License Holders

Current license holders must have a total of 16 hours of training annually. The 16 hours of training must include, but is not limited to, the following requirements:

  • Child Growth and Development and Behavior Guidance (two hours annually)*

    When accessing training on Develop, courses under Knowledge and Competency Framework Area 1 (I. Child Development and Learning) meet the requirement for Child Growth and Development.

    Courses in Knowledge and Competency Framework Area 2c (II.C. Promoting Social and Emotional Development) meet the requirement for Behavior Guidance and Child Growth and Development.
  • Active Supervision (two hours annually)*
  • SUID: Sudden Unexpected Infant Death*

    Course is required for providers caring for children birth – 12 months of age. Course is required online or in person every two years. On the "off year", providers can watch the DHS approved SUID videos in lieu of the class.

    SUID videos count toward one hour of training. Training verification is located at the bottom of the video web page and should be printed off as proof of viewing.
  • AHT: Abusive Head Trauma*

    Course is required for providers caring for children birth – 5 years of age. Course is required online or in person every two years. On the "off year", providers can watch the DHS approved AHT videos in lieu of the class.

  • Pediatric CPR (must be in person every two years)
  • First Aid (every two years)
  • Child Passenger Restraint (every five years if transporting children)
